In Kyoto, before the bells, the garden holds its breath. The moss at Saihō-ji is six different greens; the path between them has been raked into water. You kneel at a low table in the long set, pure silk pooling around the knees in the way the cloth was always meant to do — its tailored notched lapel taking the line of an older garment, half kimono, half pyjama from a Parisian hotel of the 1920s. The iron kettle begins its small song before it boils. Bamboo shifts against bamboo at the window. The first tea is bitter and exact. Outside, a single carp turns under a black pond and is gone. Care
Hand wash cold with a pH-neutral silk detergent. Roll between two towels; do not wring. Dry flat in shade and iron the lapel inside-out on a low setting to keep the collar's line crisp.
